A very useful and informative online Board Diversity Playbook has been released by Stanford University’s Women’s Leadership Innovation Lab and the California Partners Project. This Playbook can (and should) be expanded to encompass all aspects of diversity, including LGBTQ+ Board membership.
This resource was developed with an aim to empower change agents with research-based approaches to advance diverse leadership. It is a useful resource for any CEOs, investors, board members, and board nominating committees recruiting new directors to their board – especially those that do not have the resources to hire experts to run the search process. Organizations and educators who work with boards on governance, effectiveness and oversight will also find the community-sourced strategies and tactical advice valuable for their work.

Four strategies are recommended. Find the Gaps through a Skills Matrix, Expand Networks to increase the diversity of candidates. Create an Equitable Interview to make the process effective. Process, and Onboard Intentionally to foster an environment to thrive.
